The Omloop van het Hageland was the second race of the Belgian Opening Weekend. Starting this Sunday, Team Mayenne Monbana My Pie was determined to work together to secure a strong result — and they did, thanks to Fiona Mangan’s 9th place finish.
The race began with a breakaway of five riders, including 19-year-old Léa Rondel. With more than three minutes’ advantage, the young French rider was able to showcase herself at the front of the race, in front of the television cameras. She looked very comfortable, particularly on the listed climbs. Unfortunately, when a chasing group bridged across to her, she crashed, bringing down one of her fellow breakaway companions. Suffering road rash in several areas, she remounted before eventually stopping to receive treatment. Then, Fiona Mangan benefited from strong teamwork to wait for the sprint in a reduced peloton of around forty riders. In the final dash, she was able to move up at the right moment and secure 9th place at the finish.
Damien Pommereau, Sports Director : “In the end, it’s still a successful day because Fiona takes a Top 10, which is always pleasing. We score points and even improve on last year (Kiara Lylyk finished 11th in 2025). We were present at the front for a good part of the day with Léa, which is also positive. Unfortunately, Léa crashed and is suffering from road rash, but she is here to learn. She’s very young, only 19, and she didn’t hesitate. From kilometre zero, she went into the breakaway. So despite the setback, it’s valuable experience for her.”
Fiona Mangan, 9th : “It’s really great to finish in the Top 10. Yesterday at Omloop Nieuwsblad, I was frustrated because I dropped my chain on the cobbles. I knew I had good form, so I’m really happy to get a result — also for the team, because the girls really helped me mentally today. They motivated me. I didn’t feel amazing all race, but I told myself that everyone probably felt the same, and in the end I managed to get a result. We can be very proud of ourselves — it was a strong team effort, especially with Léa in the breakaway. Finally, I hope the people of Mayenne are proud of us today. It’s very special to represent this French department; we really feel their support.”
The next race, Ixina Leeuw-Oetingen, will take place on March 11. The Belgian campaign will continue in about ten days’ time — with the constant goal of making our mark.
